How to reduce a PDF's size for a UAE government or visa application
An application that needs several documents often fails at the last step because the upload is too big. The cause is usually a handful of high-resolution scans, not the number of pages. The fix is to prepare the PDF in the right order: remove what you do not need, combine what you do, then compress once.
All the tools in this guide run in your browser, so the documents stay on your device. That matters for passports, IDs and contracts.
Read the portal's limits first
Look for the maximum size, the accepted file types and whether the portal wants one PDF or one file per document. These differ between services and change from time to time, so use the numbers shown on the page you are using. If a limit is given per file and a different limit for the total, plan for the stricter one.
Write the limit at the top of a note. You will compare the real size of your file with it at the end.
Remove pages you do not need
The cheapest saving is deleting pages. A blank back page, a cover sheet or a duplicate scan adds size and no value. Use Remove PDF pages to drop them, or Extract PDF pages to keep only the ones you need as a new file.
If the application needs one document from a longer PDF, extract that page range rather than compressing the whole thing and hoping.
Combine documents in the right order
If the portal wants a single file, use Merge PDF. It shows page thumbnails so you can set the order and add a blank page if one is needed. Merge first and compress after. Compressing the merged file once is better than compressing each source and then merging, because you can see the final size in one place.
If your documents are paper, Scan to PDF turns photos into a tidy PDF with cropping and page order, and you can compress after.
Compress, then check
Open Compress PDF and start with Recommended. It reduces the resolution of large embedded pictures and keeps existing text selectable. Read the before and after sizes. If the file is still too big, a stronger setting converts pages to images, which can shrink scans a lot but makes text unselectable, so check that small print is still legible.
Open the result and read the smallest text on the page: stamps, numbers and signatures. If anything important is hard to read, use a milder setting. Where an exact limit cannot be reached at a readable quality, ask the recipient for another way to submit instead of sending something illegible.
How it works
- Note the portal's file type, size limit and whether one file or several is wanted.
- Delete pages you do not need, or extract only the pages required.
- Merge the documents in the order the portal expects.
- Compress once, read the reported size and compare it with the limit.
- Zoom in on stamps, numbers and signatures before you upload.
Before you export Strong compression can turn text into pictures. Keep your original files, and never trade readability for a smaller number if the document is legal evidence.
Common questions
Can PixnPDF guarantee a size under a specific limit?
No. The result depends on page count and how much image detail the pages carry. The tool shows the real size, and if it cannot make the file smaller it returns the original unchanged.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Compress PDF, Merge PDF and Remove PDF pages run in your browser.
Should I merge before or after compressing?
Merge first, then compress, so you can judge the final file against the limit in one go.
What if the portal only accepts JPG?
Use PDF to JPG to turn pages into pictures, then Compress image for the size. Check that the portal accepts one image per page.
