How to compress an Emirates ID scan for an online upload
Many online forms in the UAE ask for a copy of your Emirates ID, and many reject a file that is too large or in the wrong format. A phone photo of a card is often several megabytes, which is far more than a form needs. This guide shows how to turn the card into a clean, smaller file without sending it to a conversion website.
An Emirates ID is personal and sensitive. That is why the tools used here run inside your browser: the picture is processed on your own device and PixnPDF does not receive it. The only upload that happens is the one you choose to make afterwards, to the form or portal that asked for it.
Check what the form actually asks for
Before you scan anything, read the instructions on the form or portal. Some ask for one image with the front and back side by side, some ask for two separate files, and some ask for a single PDF. Each also shows its own accepted file types and maximum size. Use the numbers shown on that page, not a number you saw elsewhere, because limits differ between services and change over time.
Write down three things: the file type (PDF, JPG or PNG), the maximum size, and whether front and back must be in one file. Everything below follows from those three answers.
Capture the card cleanly
Put the card on a flat, dark and plain surface in even light. Avoid a bright reflection across the chip or the photo, and keep your phone directly above the card instead of at an angle. A straight, evenly lit picture compresses better than a crooked or shadowed one, because there is less noise for the compressor to preserve.
Scan to PDF lets you add existing photos or use the camera. Drag the four corners to the edges of the card, check the perspective and deskew preview, and put the front page before the back page. Export the result as a PDF. Camera access is optional; adding photos you already took works just as well.
Reduce the size, then check readability
Open Compress PDF if the portal wants a PDF, or Compress image if it wants a JPG or PNG. Start with the Recommended setting and read the before and after sizes shown by the tool. If you need a particular target, Compress image lets you set one, and it reports the real size it achieved. A target is best effort, so check the number rather than assuming it worked.
After compressing, zoom in on the result at normal reading size. The name, the ID number and the dates must still be sharp. If any of them is soft, go back and use a milder setting. A smaller file that nobody can read is worse than a larger file that is accepted.
Keep your own copy safe
Keep the original scan unchanged and only upload the smaller copy. If you store scans of your ID on your phone or in cloud storage, protect them. Protect PDF can add a password to a PDF, which is useful if you need to email a copy to someone who is allowed to see it. Never send the password in the same message as the file.
Photos from a phone can also carry location and camera details. If you share the image as a JPG, run it through Remove EXIF data first so the picture does not carry information you did not mean to share.
How it works
- Check the form's accepted file type, maximum size and whether front and back must be together.
- Photograph both sides of the card flat, in even light, with no reflection over the details.
- Open Scan to PDF, crop each side, order front then back and export.
- Compress the PDF or image, read the reported size and zoom in to check the ID number is sharp.
- Upload the smaller copy and keep the original somewhere private.
Before you export Do not post an ID scan on a public site or send it by chat unless the recipient is verified. If a service asks for your ID outside an official channel, stop and confirm it is genuine first.
Common questions
Does PixnPDF upload my Emirates ID?
No. Scan to PDF, Compress PDF, Compress image and Remove EXIF data run in your browser and do not send your file to PixnPDF. You still choose whether to upload the final file to the form that requested it.
What size should the file be?
Use the limit shown by the form or portal you are using. Limits vary between services and change, so this guide does not quote one. Compress in small steps until the file is under the number shown.
Should front and back be one file or two?
Follow the form. If it wants one file, put both sides in a single PDF with Scan to PDF. If it wants two, export each side separately.
The text became blurry after compressing. What now?
Use a milder setting or a larger target size. Compression trades detail for bytes, and an ID copy must stay readable more than it must be tiny.
