How to resize a passport photo for a UAE visa application
A visa or residence form usually rejects a photo for simple reasons: the wrong proportions, a head that is too small in the frame, a coloured background or a file that is too big. Fixing those on your computer or phone takes a few minutes if you know what to change.
This guide uses the Passport & ID photo tool, which has a UAE preset and works in your browser. The photo you choose is processed on your own device and is not uploaded to PixnPDF.
Know which service you are applying through
Photo rules are set by the service, not by the tool. A visa or residence application and an Emirates ID application can ask for different things. The UAE preset in Passport & ID photo is a 40 × 60 mm frame based on a published ICP service guide for visa and residence, and the tool itself says it is not an Emirates ID preset. Always read the instructions on the service you are using and follow those if they differ.
Also look at the digital requirements on the upload page: accepted file type, minimum and maximum pixel size, and maximum file size. If the page gives numbers, you will use them in the last step.
Start with a good source photo
The best result comes from a good photograph. Stand facing a plain light wall in even light, keep your face straight to the camera with a neutral expression, and make sure nothing casts a shadow on your face or the wall behind you. Let someone else take it from about an arm's length away so the picture is not distorted.
The tool frames and sizes a photo; it does not retouch a face. Background colour in the tool fills transparent areas only. If your background is not plain, use Remove background first. It runs in your browser, and the first use downloads a model, so allow a moment. Check the edges around hair afterwards, since fine hair can need extra care.
Frame it with the guides
Open Passport & ID photo, choose the UAE preset and place your photo. Line up the head guides so your face sits in the marked zone, with the top of the head and chin inside the lines. You can export the single photo and, if you want to print, a 4 × 6 inch sheet at 300 DPI.
Check the preview as if you were the officer reviewing it: is the face centred, is the head the right size and is the background clean? If the answer to any of these is no, adjust the crop and look again before you export.
Meet the upload size
If the upload page names a maximum file size, open Compress image and set a target under that number. The tool shows the real size of the result so you can see whether it worked. If the page names pixel dimensions, use Resize image to set them exactly.
Do not shrink so far that the face becomes soft. A sharp photo that is slightly larger than the limit can be reduced in more than one pass, but a blurred photo cannot be repaired.
How it works
- Read the photo size, background and file requirements on the service you are using.
- Take a straight, evenly lit photo against a plain light wall.
- Open Passport & ID photo, choose the UAE preset and align your face with the guides.
- Export, then compress or resize to match the upload limit shown on the page.
- Look at the final file at full size before you upload it.
Before you export Acceptance is decided by the issuing authority, not by this tool. If your application is rejected for the photo, read the reason given and adjust to that.

Common questions
Is the UAE preset the same for every application?
No. The preset follows a published ICP service guide for visa and residence photos. The tool notes it is not an Emirates ID preset. Confirm the requirement of your own service.
Can the tool change my background to white?
Only partly. Background colour fills transparent areas. To replace a busy background, use Remove background first and then frame the result, and check the edges.
Does PixnPDF store my photo?
No. The tools run in your browser and your photo is not uploaded to PixnPDF.
What is the maximum file size?
It depends on the service. This guide does not quote one; use the number shown on the upload page.
